Over two years ago a very good friend of mine aunt died. I watched as my friend deteriorated alongside the aunt that had been like a mother to her and it was so sad. It is in both their honor that I wrote this story.
The pancreas is a large organ that is found behind the stomach. It makes and releases enzymes that help the body absorb foods, especially fats. The exact cause is unknown, but pancreatic cancer is more common in smokers and people who are obese. Pancreatic cancer is slightly more common in women than in men. The risk increases with age. A small number of cases are related to genetic syndromes that are passed down through families.
Pancreatic cancer is often labeled a silent disease because many times the signs and symptoms can go unnoticed until the cancer is in the advanced stage. Even when there are early signs and symptoms, they may be vague and easily attributed to another disease. Surgery offers the best treatment results when the disease is found at an early stage, before it has spread. Because pancreatic cancer is usually found in an advanced stage (after it has spread), often times surgery to remove the cancer is not an option. -lustgarten-
