Good Girls Bite
By K.M. Jackson
“Suddenly a wave splashed, sending an unwelcome chill to the back of Mika’s neck. Her eyes shot open. The ocean, the cold, Alejandro. Oh crap. What was she doing? This wouldn’t do. Not do at all. She couldn’t be dominated by him. He dominated everyone he met. But not her. Mika’s heart pulled tight as she let his tongue sweep across hers oh-so silkily one more time, and then she bit down. Hard.”— Scene from Through The Lens by K.M. Jackson
Throughout my years of writing and rewriting, submitting and coming to grips with becoming one with my voice and the art of rejection, one criticism that I’ve had quite a few times over the years and that I’ve come to expect and at times welcome is that fact that I have, to put it nicely, spirited (some would use a not so nice B word) heroines.
I would call them strong willed.
You see, though the land of contemporary romances of late has been ripe with cozy, small town, Labrador retrieving, afghan knitting romances, all of which I adore and admire, they are not my world and I would never be able to do one justice. I was taught to write what you know and what I know is the bright lights of the city that never sleeps and a boatload of strong willed women.
I was brought up on was the glitz of and the glam of the big 80’s romance at the knees of my mother and grandmother while watching Dynasty, where the only things bigger than your shoulder pads were your attitudes. And come on didn’t we all really root more for the super cool and at times caustic, Alexis over that soft talking Crystal Carrington anyway?
I have always admired strong women with a bit of fight to them. A woman that could stand up for herself and not be a pushover to any man. Even if he was the last billionaire on earth and her ex’s wedding to her college roommate is just 3 days away. No need to lose your head and definitely not your cool after the first heart stopping kiss.
Thanks so much for inviting me here today, Angela. I’d love to hear from your readers who are some of their favorite feisty heroines. One person can win a digital copy of Through The Lens!
Mika Walters is a normal woman working in the not-so-normal world of New York fashion. As longtime assistant to uber-sexy photographer Alejandro Vega, she’s tired of being the girl in the background.
Just once she wants Alejandro to look at her with the same smoldering look he gives to his willowy models and now she has her chance.
After a travel mishap where the rest of the crew and the models can’t make the remote island location shoot for another three days, Mika is taking her moment to catch Alejandro’s eye and put herself in front of his camera and if all goes to plan, his bed… at least until the real world catches up with them.
Alejandro doesn’t know what’s gotten into Mika. Maybe it’s the sand, maybe it’s the sun, but he doesn’t really care. All he knows is that he’s finally opened his eyes and is seeing her clearly for the first time as the smart, gorgeous and incredibly irresistible woman she is.
But why can’t she realize that what he’s feeling for her is not one of his usual one, well, three night stands?
What’s it going to take for him to prove to Mika that she’s the woman he wants? Now and forever.
