Edits…Edits…*bangs head against the computer*…Edits…Edits…
*throws a fit, cursing and ranting, kicking pillows*
Edits is a five letter curse word! Grrr…I’ve been rocking along pretty good, working through the edits and I’m proud of what I’m accomplishing. Thursday night comes and—WHAM—I come up against a fortified concrete wall. You did realize I said “fortified”, right? There’s got to be steel—no, titanium or the U.S. military—inside that concrete because there ain’t nothing getting through it! So, yeah, fortified! And, yeah, I know that’s not proper English and I don’t care!
*sighs dramatically and counts to ten slowly*

Well, that didn’t make me feel any better or calmer. *blows hair out of my face* For the most part, I enjoy the editing process. Maybe that’s crazy, but I’m the oddball in my family, so I’m comfortable being there. Edits are fun because I relearn and fall in love with my characters all over again.
Then Thursday night rolls around and that blinking cursor mocks me. *whimpers* I’d rather be tormented by my muse than have nothing but blankness rolling around in my head. Have I worked my muse—yes and probably too hard? Do I need to reboot him by giving him a mental vacation? Yes again…probably. But…but…but…we have a self-mandated deadline! I work best when I’m in a crunch, so hence the reason for the deadline.
So, my plan…I’ll clean house first thing this morning and then *glares at my muse and screams* we’re freaking editing! If that doesn’t work, my muse and I are going to have a ‘coming to Jesus meeting’ as us Southerners call it or I’ll give him a good ole’ fashion butt whoopin’! lol
Muse, you have been forewarned! *giggles evilly and taps a whip against my palm*
One book that survived edits and my fickle muse, Elfin Blood, out now at Noble Romance Publishing.

Gracen, it was such a pleasure to have you here. My muse and I battle quite often. Sometimes, I just wish I could shake her
ELFIN BLOOD BLURB:
Scorned by her own kind for her half-breed elf status, Julija lives a lonely existence among her Ivory Elf kin. She is the only one the elves can trust when a magical book in elf lore is stolen. Relegated to steal the Book from the vampire thief, Landau Jamieson, she’s surprised to discover he has the ability to walk in daylight. Refusing to be deterred by developing setbacks, she’s committed to executing the heist for an Ivory King who grows more desperate to possess the Book. Nothing about the vampire is as it appears and Julija begins to doubt her mission. Worse, she begins to worry she won’t have the strength to guard her heart from her sworn enemy.
Landau is fascinated by the elf stalking him and baffled by the potent hunger she elicits after ten thousand years of celibacy. Soon he discovers the lovely sprite is a pawn in a dangerous game–orchestrated by none other than a reviled enemy from his past. While blind-sided by her beauty and her magical powers, the least of which is the spell she casts on his heart, the sinister plot unfolds. What started out as folly to catch a thief, blossoms into a love that casts aside bloodlines and forges all boundaries.

EXCERPT: (R – Rated)
Alberic demanded Julija map out her strategy for stealing back the Ivory Elfin Book of Lore. Just once, she wanted to find the courage to tell the stuffed shirt to stuff it! His snotty order was not high on her priority list today, especially after he blamed her for Landau’s kiss at Ravens the other night.
Bastard!
She’d show him she’d do what she wanted, when she wanted, but more to the point how she wanted. Her rebellion, however, was short lived. With a mental snort, she accepted that disobeying Alberic wasn’t an option. Considering the task, it was lame trying to rebel, particularly after he’d employed her to steal. He made sure she didn’t have a choice, hinting he’d kill her if she failed.
She flipped through the magazine Lipstick and Highheels. Gaudy jewelry, outlandish clothing and come-fuck-me high heels filled every page. She loved everything in the magazine, wanted to own and wear all they had to offer.
To counterpoint her complex life, she desired the mundane objects human beings offered in the magazine ads, and wished her worries were simple as mankind’s. She doubted any of them took orders from a highbrow immortal like she did.
With her nail, she scratched the fragrance patch in the magazine ad and reveled in the luscious scent wafting around her. The coffee shop doors jingled, drawing her gaze. In the blink of an eye, her senses shifted from scent to sight as the Prince of Veil—Landau Jamieson—entered the coffee shop.
Oh, shit!
His gaze honed in on her like a gun laser. A cocky grin curled the corner of his freaking sexy mouth as he headed straight for her, all swagger and overconfidence. “Mind if I join you?”
“Yes,” she said, hoping the anarchy in her voice would deter him.
When he reached for the chair, she kicked the legs out and sent it tumbling over to the floor. A patron squealed and others turned to gawk.
“Find another seat,” she said with a harsh glare and didn’t appreciate his mocking chuckle.
“Tsk. Tsk,” he said, the corners of his eyes crinkling with laughter. “You’re causing another scene.”
“I don’t give a shit.” She had the feeling he enjoyed provoking her.
He righted the chair before she could stop him. “Watch your language, Jewel.”
Sloughing off the endearment, she watched him spin the chair around until the back faced her.
“It doesn’t become you.” Landau straddled the chair in an all-male way and draped his arms over the top. The back of the chair barely reached the middle of his chest.
“I don’t give a shit,” she reiterated, tossing the magazine onto the table.

I find that how hard edits seem is directly proportional to how unclear my vision for the book is. The more clearly I see what I want to accomplish with the story, the easier it is to edit (and the more fun editing becomes). When I get bogged down, it’s because I’ve gotten muddled on why I was writing the story in the first place.

I love the cover, and want to win a book.
